The Worst Version of Juno (2007)
Juno has always had one of my favorite soundtracks and though I'd like to think of my taste as more refined, basically everything Judd Apatow has made never fails to cheer me up. In lieu of these precursors I decided to ruin my favorite things about Juno.
Here's my Juno flip.
I used Deezer's spleeter to split the audio into 4 stems and replaced as much of the soundtrack as I could without cutting out sound effects or dialogue.
spleeter separate -d 4800 -p spleeter:4stems -o output juno.mp4
The max duration spleeter
tops out at is 80 minutes, so I needed to split the movie into two pieces.
I added in a couple gags unrelated to the honestly fantastic soundtrack. I'll post the new soundtrack on a different page at some point because I'd like to present it without spoilers. I mixed the media in the free trial version of Final Cut Pro for Mac.
It was a surprisingly therapeutic project. I began with intention of using only the most cringe songs of the early 2000s era. I found that trying to find really awful songs is harder than it seems. Creed really slaps when you're in a good mood and euphoria starts to kick in when you envision pretty great cinematography up against this absolute garbage. I'd be failing you if I didn't also mention the nostalgia factor of remembering a time when I loved these songs and thinking about how much of a noodle I really was.
These feelings quickly created an entry for the insertion of a couple songs I dearly love that will never become cringe. It was difficult to maintain the vision of the project after this. A wellspring of inspiration has a tendency to derail my ambitions.
Shortly after beginning to dub I realized I was going to need to find a single song that plays behind multiple scenes in the movie. For this, I again used spleeter to keep only the guitar and bass tracks, adjusted the volumes and used parts of the song throughout the entire film.
I would really like to find a tool like spleeter that isolates unique voices from any dialogue. A tool like this would enable us to have more fun with vocal effects or ideally record our own voice as a replacement for any of the characters. I would love to hear my voice come from Elliot Page's bod. I wonder if he's done vocal training post-transition? That shit mesmerizes me. I need vocal training to express myself properly and I'm not even trans, I couldn't imagine the rollercoaster that must be.
This was fun, I hope the result is horrifying. Love you. ❤️
